The overall purpose of this article is to provide a convenient summary of empirical enquiry on i... more The overall purpose of this article is to provide a convenient summary of empirical research on improvisation in full general music education and thereby provide guidance to researchers and practitioners, using a systematic, narrative-review approach. Past analysing 20 music instruction research articles, published from 2000–2015 in peer-reviewed journals, we firstly provide an overview of the key features and knowledge of existing research. Secondly we identify how improvisation has been characterized, conceptually before, thirdly, describing the implications of the literature for improvisation in practice. Our article reveals that improvisation tends to be an overlooked activeness both in music education contexts and in music instruction research. När människan lyssnar på musik, hör hon sällan bara det som klingar. Mer eller mindre medvetet associerar hon också till personliga minnen, särskilda platser eller musikaliska och sociala konventioner som finns i samhället. Det kan vara kulturella föreställningar, konnotationer, om hur en viss musik är förbunden med vissa (grupper av) människor – exempelvis kvinnor, män, svenskar, homosexuella. Det kan vara musikaliska konventioner som är knutna till en viss stil – tonartshöjning, ett särskilt "audio" eller typiska ackordfärgningar. Sådana konnotationer och konventioner kan påverka hur musiken värderas, vilket i sin tur kan göra människor "döva" för musik som känns främmande. This article draws on a study designed to analyse parental expectations of the Swedish municipal ... more than This article draws on a study designed to analyse parental expectations of the Swedish municipal schoolhouse of arts (hereafter MSA) (in Swedish: kommunal musik- och kulturskola). The study is based on in-depth interviews conducted and informed past grounded theory. Although parental expectations are scarcely compatible, the study reveals a hope that the whole kid volition be nurtured, both musically and socially. Information technology also transpires that parental expectations vary according to the activities offered by the item schoolhouse.
